If you were looking for a sign to grab your besties and do a photoshoot at the Palm Springs Windmills, this is it. So technically I know they are called wind turbines, but Windmills just rolls off the tongue better. I also know most people refer to this spot as the Palm Springs Windmills, so I wanted to make the search-ability easier.
Here is everything you need to know if you’re headed to the Palm Springs Windmills:
How to get there: it’s surprisingly easier to get there than you would think. You want to head west on Garnet Ave past N Indian canyon drive. About a mile further west you will start to see side roads that lead you to the wind turbines. Take whichever one you like the view of most. If you’re worried about getting lost, trust me you can’t.
What to bring: besides the obvious of adorable outfits, hats and accessories…WATER and sunscreen. It is hot and dry out there with ZERO shade. Trust me you will want to stay hydrated and sun safe.
What time to go: We went about two hours before sunset. If you’re just going to see the turbines and not take photos you can really go at any time of day, just be warned it is hot. If your goal is to take photos I would either go first thing in the morning, or towards golden hour to avoid the harsh light and enjoy a gorgeous sunset view behind the turbines.
Warnings: It. Is. Windy. I feel like this goes without saying since it is literally a valley of wind turbines, but it is WINDY. It gets progressively windier as it gets darker. If you want your hair to look perfect during your shoot, you should probably give up on that idea.
You will get dirty. Its a giant field of windy dirt so expect to bring a little desert home on you and your clothes.
Stay on the “road” there are a bunch of gravel side “roads” to get up closer to the wind turbines. Stay on the gravel path and do not venture into the deeper parts of the sand. We may or may not have learned this one the hard way…. thankfully we had the jeep.
This is my first photo series posted on here that wasn’t shot by me, but what a better way to brag about my insanely talented friends photography, then to show it on here! You can check out her website here and if you’re in the San Diego area reach out to book a session! ( Tell her I sent you! )
If you’re here for the fashion – I’ve linked as much as possible below! I bought these jeans from Zara the day before this shoot, and of course wore my Docs. My sunnies are from a boutique in San Clemente but I found almost an identical pair on Urban’s website.
