I love a good accessory. Sun hats are everywhere this summer, and I had been eyeing the Packable one from TuckerNuck for weeks. I kept putting off buying it because “I didn’t need it”, and then it was out of stock and too late to last minute buy it for my Nantucket trip.
This hat is adorable so if you’re not a DIY-er you can shop it here, but if you’re on a budget like me and love having options stick with me.
With minimal options left I decided to DIY my own hat. I headed used one I had gotten from TJ Maxx a few months ago and removed the bow it came with (wasn’t really my style). I couldn’t decide between stripes or a solid white bow, and I knew I definitely had no business packing two hats for a 3 day trip, so I got creative.
Here is what you’ll need:
- Sun Hat
- Velcro Dots
- Hot Glue Gun
- Gross Grain Ribbon – I used two different widths: 1.5 & 2.25 inches.
- I linked some ribbon below from amazon as an example but it is MUCH cheaper at Joanns or Michaels.
- Scissors
Now here is how to do it:
Most of the things I make I usually just wing it and hope for the best. This was no different.
- Glue about 7-8 velcro dots (all of the same side) to the brim of the hat. Press down and let the glue dry completely.
- While the glue is drying, Make your Bow! I used this youtube video to help me get the perfect bow and it was extremely simple and easy to follow.
- Take the corresponding velcro dot and attach it to the now secured velcro on the hat.
- Wrap the ribbon around the hat (prior to gluing any velcro dots to it) and cut off any excess ribbon on the non bow side.
- Now, place glue on the back of the first now attached velcro dot and press one end of the ribbon to it.
- Repeat this step with each dot pressing hard so that the glue sticks, and pulling the ribbon tightly as you go to prevent gaps in the ribbon. Doing it this way as you go ensures that the dots will match up, and there is no need to measure.
- LET THE GLUE DRY. Hot glue dries super quickly, but at least give it 2-3 minutes.
- Attach a velcro dot to the end of the non bow ribbon side, and the back of the bow side allowing the bow to firmly attach.
It is insanely easy to do, there is a ton of room for error, and it should only take about 15 minutes! Here are some photos of the process along with some in person photos of how I styled it! I also had the cutest little helper.
