Hi everyone! It’s been over 2 weeks since my last post on my blog and Instagram. I’ve been using this time to listen, learn, and amplify black voices.
Learning about racisim, and not experiencing it is a privilege. In a time of easy access to information, remaining ignorant is a choice. I know we are all busy. No one is expecting you to quit your job, give up all of your worldly possessions, and dedicate your entire life to fighting racism and social injustices ( I mean no one is stopping you if you want to though!). The call to action is to be an ally in your daily life. Evaluate yourself and your personal biases, acknowledge your privilege, learn from black people and people of color, and call out racisim where you see it. Take your newfound education and access to resources and share them with others in your life. The hardest conversations to have are with those close to you who have yet to pledge allyship.
No one needs to read a post about a white woman telling you how to be anti racist and support people of color, so with that being said, here are some of the videos, posts, and articles I have read so far published by people of color. This list is not comprehensive of everything you can do or watch, but it will be a short list of a place to start.
@ohhappydani on instagram has posted 3 IGTV live videos “Turning Awarness into Action” having an open conversation about allyship and race. This is a great place to start and you can watch the videos here, here, and here. Her creativity and content was the first place I started and I continue to learn from her.
@themanacho IGTV video “Dear White People”
@violadavis IGTV video Systemic Racism explained
@goodtomicha IGTV No one thinks that they’re racist. And that’s the problem
@wastefreemarie posts on how to be an ally, how to respond to common racist statements, and actionable steps towards anti racism
@lilly.someson post on Ways non-black people can socially transition into a long term movement.
@venitaaspen & @sophiegold have been hosting weekly instagram lives every tuesday night answering questions and sharing open dialogue. They will also be launching a podcast soon!
So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Olu. I just started reading this one last night.
Like i said, this is not a comprehensive list, I know there are hundreds of fantastic articles, videos, and books out there. My hope for this post is that it helps give at least one person a starting point for change in their own life.
I will Continue to share travel, style, and lifestyle posts, but I will be making a conscious effort to incorporate black owned business, and anti racism resources. I hope you will also do your own research, continue to educate yourself, and become a true ally.
