A travel blogger’s worst nightmare – one day in a bucket list destination. I have always always wanted to go to Martha’s Vineyard, so when Josh (my travel bestie) agreed we immediately started planning…. two weeks before the date… Anyway not important!
I started googling the best places for food, photos, and sight seeing and I have to admit I was a bit overwhelmed. I wanted to write an easy to read, one day travel guide to pack in as much of the island as possible.
How to get there:
We were staying in Newport and knew we needed to take a ferry to get to the island and wow was that overwhelming picking the right one. We ended up going with the SeaStreak ferry from New Bedford to Oak Bluffs. The ferry was under an hour and had multiple departure times which was perfect with our time constraints.
Before you do ANYTHING grab a booklet from the ferry dock. It breaks down each town and major sites to see as well as the bus routes and any events int he area.
First stop: Oak Bluffs
Arriving in Oak Bluffs we immediately set off to checkout the adorable Gingerbread houses. This is one of the most popular sites to see! We made our way to the Black Dog outlet shortly after and eventually to the water where there was a pop up market!
Edgartown
After exploring Oak Bluffs we bought a bus pass. The bus pass is only $9 for unlimited rides for the entire day. Trust me this is a MUST. We hopped on a bus and headed to Edgartown in search of Hydrangeas. Much to my disappointment we were a bit too early for hydrangeas but there were many other beautiful blooms.
We walked all along Water street until we hit the Edgartown Lighthouse and took some photos! On our stroll back we got to check out the jaw droopingly beautiful homes and stopped at the best coffee shop: Toccopuro coffee!
Aquinnah Cliffs
Then we hopped on the bus again and set off to the Cliffs. It took us 3 bus rides to get there, we were really making the most out of that bus pass. It was 100% worth it. The absolutely breath taking views and perfect lighthouse made me feel like we were in a completely different place entirely!
Finally we hopped back on the bus all the way back to Oak Bluff to catch the ferry! We grabbed a quick bite in a window serve Pizza place, Giordano’s, and it was delicious! Perfect for a time sensitive day.
I can’t wait to go back and would love to hear any recommendations for my next trip!
