While Planning for a short weekend in Vermont/New Hampshire for my first New England fall, the first activity on the agenda was Leaf peeping of course. Several google searches and internet rabbit holes later the consensus was that the Kancamagus Highway was THE spot for the best leaf views and stops.
We spent our first day in Vermont (blog posts to come) and then made our way to New Hampshire. The Highway stretches for a short 35 miles in Northern New Hampshire through the White Mountain National Forest. The GPS says it will take 52 minutes, but I would give yourself an hour and a half to two hours. There are tons of side trails, creeks and bridges to explore and take photos. It took us about an hour and a half to get through. We stopped a lot for photos – even in the middle of the road at one point!
My best advice is to hit the road early. The highway fills up fast but not as fast as the dunkin donuts right before the entrance. New England truly runs on dunkin and what leaf peeping trip is complete without coffee?
How to get there:
We started at Dunkin Donuts – 44 Main Street, Lincoln NH 03251
*please note this is not the official start of the highway but its about 2 minutes before it and the best gauge of where to start. I also firmly believe the day does not start until you’ve had a good cup of coffee.
The Highway will drop you off at the adorable town of Conway New Hampshire. We were extremely pressed for time so exploring here was definitely not possible.
I found the perfect sweater for the occasion and I really think I reached my full fall potential (you can shop it here). The sweater is from Kiel James Patrick, and fair warning it runs very large. I got the small which was perfect for an oversized cozy look, but I would definitely recommend sizing down if you are looking for a more fitted look.
All photos were taken on my Sony Alpha 7iii which I am absolutely in love with!
